Big Thief: Summer 2023

Egyptian Room (Indianapolis, IN)
07/26/23

Eclectic indie-folk four-piece Big Thief made a stop at the Egyptian Room in Indianapolis, Indiana on their 2023 summer tour. It was only fitting that the first song of the night was none other than frontwoman Adrianne Lenker’s “Indiana” from her solo project’s album entitled a-sides. On stage in her home state, Lenker performed the soft ballad about leaving home to a sold-out venue full of teary-eyed fans.

Most of the set was made up of songs from the band’s album, Dragon New Warm Mountain, I Believe in You, which was released last year. Big Thief also performed their newest single, “Vampire Empire,” which they debuted on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert back in March. Twisting through a mix of unreleased songs and fan favorites, Big Thief never fails to unveil their unique chemistry as a band. It’s very evident that these four musicians have a connection that goes beyond words. You can feel it in each of their songs – within the soft twang and the plunky acoustic guitar and the nostalgia reverberating in Adrianna Lenker’s voice.

When the band arrived at the end of their set, the last chords of “Masterpiece” still ringing in the air, it was obvious that they had more in their systems. After a roaring encore from the crowd, the band came back onstage to perform an a capella version of “Paul” from their 2016 album, Masterpiece – and at that moment, everyone in the room was Big Thief.
