Victoria Canal: Victoria Canal & Friends

Victoria Canal

The Sun Rose (West Hollywood, CA)
03/24/23

On March 24th, Victoria Canal hosted and headlined a night of music at The Sun Rose in West Hollywood, CA. Complete with a boarding school chic theme, everyone who attended was asked to come in costume to fit the theme. Books and candles lined the piano and stage as guests filtered in to sit at tables in the small venue. At the beginning of the evening, Victoria introduced her audience to all of her friends who would be performing, calling them out by name, attendance style. Several of Victoria’s friends performed with her as instrumental and vocal support, including Jackson Lundy, Annika Bennett, Rett Madison, Olivia Barton, Madison Cunningham, Mike Viola, and Lucy Clearwater, with special guest Jason Sibi-Okumu closing out the night. The crowd was mixed with fans, other musicians, industry professionals, and celebrities such as Maggie Wheeler and Blu Eyes.

Annika Bennett kicked off the night’s performances by playing an unreleased original, with Victoria playing piano and providing backing vocals. Next up was Lucy Clearwater, who played a song that revolved around trying to date in Los Angeles, also accompanied by Canal on piano. Mike Viola then played an acoustic unreleased song called “Audrey Forever.” As each artist had their moment to play their songs, the audience was quiet and listened intently to what they each had to say and sing. Jackson Lundy busted out his bluesy vocals for an acoustic song that had everyone laughing and singing along. Olivia Barton, who had just met Canal a few weeks before, played a song from her most recent full-length album, This is a Good Sign.

Madison Cunningham, who recently won a Grammy Award for Best Folk Album, performed “Something To Believe In” off of her 2019 album, Who Are You Now, with piano and harmonies from Canal. Rett Madison played the title track off her debut album, Pin Up Daddy, in which she began by openly discussing gender expression. Victoria returned to the stage after a quick break to sing her own set of songs. This included fan favorites such as emotional “swan song,” “pity season,” and a few unreleased songs as well. She even talked a little bit about the songwriting process when writing about her body for the first time.
