Orville Peck: Bronco

The National (Richmond, VA)
04/14/23

The National in Richmond, Virginia was packed full with dressed-up attendees – outfits complete with cowboy hats, masks, and lots of glitter. Richmond’s music scene is quite all-or-nothing, and they certainly gave their all for Orville Peck. Just over a year ago, Orville released his 2nd full-length album, Bronco. The musician is heavily influenced by old-timey country music, but even for those who don’t prefer country music, there is something to love in all of his songs. It’s just folky enough to be a little less niche, and Orville being openly gay allows even more listeners to relate to him.

The show begins with songs from Bronco, including “Daytona Sand,” “The Curse of the Blackened Eye,” and “C’mon Baby, Cry.” Two very fitting covers signify the middle of the set – Poison’s “Every Rose Has It’s Thorn,” followed by Willie Nelson’s “Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other.” Every show also features a drag performance during “Queen of the Rodeo” from Pony, Orville’s debut full-length album.
