Cannons: Heartbeat Highway

Greek Theatre (Los Angeles, CA)
09/29/23

On September 29th, electro-pop alternative group Cannons arrived at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, California on their second to last stop of tour. The tour covered 23 cities nationwide, which included a special performance at Bleached Fest in San Diego, California in August that kicked it all off. Based on the sold-out crowd in attendance, it is clear that Cannons’ music does not appeal to just one group of people. Lined up outside the venue were people both young and old – couples, families, and solo attendees. Although excited to hear the headliner, most of the audience was patient and vocally showed support for both opening acts: Jane Leo and Two Another.

Around 9:30 P.M., with the sound of “What’s Love Got to Do with It” by Tina Turner echoing throughout the Greek, it was finally time for Cannons to take the stage. The lights dimmed and fog began to cover the stage, as guitarist Ryan Clapham and keyboardist/bassist Paul Davis emerged from the sides of the stage. As the first few notes of their song, “Shadows,” began to play and lead singer Michelle Joy appeared, the audience immediately began cheering and jumped up out of their seats to groove to the beat. Michelle was very interactive with the crowd, walking back and forth across the stage whilst effortlessly hitting every note. The band continued on to perform “Come Alive” from their 2022 album, Fever Dream, as well as “Talk Talk” from their 2019 project, Shadows.

With a very distinct sound, Cannons immediately sets themselves apart from every other concert I’ve seen this year. Coming off of their most successful year of their career so far, they are definitely worth checking out when they’re in your area!
