boygenius: The Film Premiere

El Rey Theatre (Los Angeles, CA)
03/30/23

At the end of March, indie-rock trio boygenius arrived at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles, California to premiere their film, the film, directed by Kristen Stewart, as well as their debut full-length album, the record. Fans lined the block for hours before the doors opened, waiting eagerly to be let inside. Dozens of photographers lined the red carpet where the limo was set to pull up. The supergroup, consisting of Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus, pulled up in a black stretch limo, and fans started screaming their names as photographers tried to capture the chaotic moment. After a few moments, the three of them stepped out of the car with their arms interlocked and joy on their faces, sharing the moment with each other. They posed for a moment in front of the marquee before heading inside for the premiere.

Inside, the theater was set with rows of folding chairs in the middle of the room where the general admission goers normally reside. The event was catered by Monty’s Good Burger, a beloved plant-based restaurant in L.A., and blue popcorn was also provided! Photobooths lined the walls and the line for merch – which included vinyls, hoodies, and shirts – wrapped around the room. The lights dimmed and everyone’s attention turned to the screen. Fans began to scream in surprise and delight as Kristen Stewart emerged to give an introduction!

After the premiere of the film, the boys made their way back to the stage to engage in an intimate Q&A session. Audience members asked detailed questions about the album process, how the iconic trio became friends, and how the album writing process was different from their self-titled debut E.P. from 2018. While most of the session was for the press, fans were given an opportunity to ask more informal questions, such as “What should I name my dog?” and “Can you tell us something unique about yourselves?” boygenius gave very little away about the actual album, which only sparked my interest more and made me eager to go home and listen to the album from start to finish!
