September has rolled back around and school is now in session, meaning… FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLASSES! At my school, taking a language is compulsory until 11th grade. Luckily for me, French has always been my favorite class. However, for those who struggle remembering the dreaded conjugations, confusing vocabulary, or just want to pick up a language fast, this article should help you out.

  1. Be patient and take your time!
Fluency doesn’t come with a snap of a finger. Make sure to provide yourself with time each day to learning the language. Integrate studying vocabulary or listening to foreign podcasts as part of your homework schedule. The more you practice, the better you’ll become.

  3. Always be learning!
Think up words you don’t know, look them up in a bilingual dictionary or Google Translate, and write them down! This is important for knowing every day words which will come in handy with fluency.

  4. Grammar, grammar, grammar!
The most boring and tedious part of learning any language, but it will help you out in the long run. Spend 10 minutes every day just going over the grammatical rules so your sentences make sense! Knowing your grammar will hugely help you out in exams, too.

  8. Try writing sentences with the vocabulary you know!
Try doing this without using a dictionary or translate application. This will help train your mind to think up words on the spot, rather than depend on being told the correct translation from English words.

  9. Post-it notes are your best friend!
Place post-it notes on objects around your bedroom or rooms around your house with the correct translation in the language you’re learning. As you walk around, read these post-it notes and say them aloud. Day by day, you’ll remember them perfectly.
