Saturdays are important. They are (hopefully) a break from school, work, and other tiresome activities, and they must be done right! Below, I have designed an ideal Saturday itinerary, inspired by my own Saturdays.
I don’t believe in waking up before at least 9:00 on weekends. School, or whatever keeps you busy on weekdays, can be tiring! Make sure you catch up on your sleep on Saturdays; it helps.
Make some vegan banana chocolate chip cookies for breakfast. (Psst: they’re easy and healthy.)
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
- Mix the following ingredients:
- 2 spotty mashed bananas
- 1 cup of old fashioned oats
- a lil cinnamon (it depends on your taste)
- chocolate chips (again, the amount depends on you)
- (optional: coconut shavings, allspice, peanut butter, raspberries, etc.)
- Spoon it out onto a parchment paper-covered cookie sheet and place in the oven for long enough that they’re slightly browned and semi-hardened. That’s it! Enjoy!
While you eat, read a book. I’m currently re-reading Dr. Faustus, and I love it*.
Some other suggestions I have are:
Poetry: Esperanza: Poems for Orpheus, The Magicians’ Union, Loose Woman
Historical: The Book Thief, Night, Uprising, The Help, The Secret Life of Bees, Into the Wild
Novels: The Kite Runner, The House on Mango Street, Wintergirls, My Sister’s Keeper, The Last Song, The Bean Trees, Written on the Body, Luna, Speak, A Wrinkle in Time
Philosophy: The Ethics of What We Eat, Plato’s Symposium
Plays: Twelfth Night, A Streetcar Named Desire, Death of a Salesman
*Bear in mind that I’m an English major and I also love just about everything.
Eat something yummy for lunch, and then go out! Personally, one of my favorite weekend activities is thrift shopping. You can find so many amazing, vintage stuff, and for such good prices, too. This past weekend, I bought eight books for only four dollars! They also had some really cute plants.
Go hike with a friend! I love hiking because it both gives you a chance to catch up with the people you love and to be healthy. Below are some photos of one of my most recent adventures with my bestie, Jess.
We go to a very agriculture-heavy school, so there are cows roaming around everywhere! I’ve never been so close to any before, but honestly, they were just like cats and dogs. They’re a little slow to warm up to people, but they’re so sweet and playful with each other. If you have any animals near you, you should absolutely visit them. That’s my advice.
Watch the sunset. It’s a must.
Eat a good dinner. It’s always fun to go out, but if you’re like me and more frugal, pasta is also always a great option.
Study a little, especially if you have midterms! You know you’ll be grateful that you did later.
11:00 P.M.-2:00 A.M.
Have a sleepover party with your best friends or apartment-mates. Get snuggled up in bed and watch movies. Last weekend, we watched The Parent Trap and Now and Then. Up next on the list are Miss Congeniality, She’s the Man, and Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen. Eat some ice cream (psst, Ben and Jerry’s now has some that are totally vegan), paint your nails, color in an adult coloring book, and play Truth or Dare with some good tunes in the background (I discovered Nick Drake today and love him).
Rest up for your next adventure! Beach day on Sunday? Or, if you’re from a colder environment, how about sledding?
I hope this inspires you for this upcoming Saturday! Have some fun!
