Near the Capitol Building in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania lies the tiny French crêpe restaurant Au Bon Lieu. Despite its small size, the joint is successfully able to stand out on the busy street due to its vibrant green walls. Accompanied by some outdoor seating, Au Bon Lieu looked as cute as ever!
When my dad and I walked into the shop, I’m not going to lie, I was really surprised with just how small the space was. All of it was utilized to accommodate the indoor seating as well as the kitchen. However, the small amount of space had no effect on the comfort of the restaurant! I was very comfortable at my seat; I felt like I wasn’t too far away or too close to anyone. I also really enjoyed the cozy intimate atmosphere.
As you can already tell, Au Bon Lieu was quite literally the definition of cute and cozy. When we sat down at our seats, the first thing I saw was a mother and her daughter sitting next to us, drawing on their table in chalk. I noticed that all the tables were coated in black chalkboard paint and had a little tray full of different-colored chalk to go with them. I thought it was the neatest thing, especially for the kids, and started scribbling right away!
Eventually, we picked up the menus and tried to figure out what we should order. Along with many hot and cold beverages, they offered a large variety of crêpes which were separated into the categories of savory and sweet. Since it was around lunch time, we decided to start off with a savory crêpe and then go from there. I got the smoked salmon, mozzarella, capers, tomato, and egg while my dad got the turkey breast, mozzarella, and egg.
The crêpes were absolutely amazing and we finished them within minutes. I learned throughout the meal that it is actually kind of hard to eat crêpes without making a mess (at least, for me it was), and also that, despite what I thought, they were actually really filling. If it weren’t for our curiosity and rare appearance in Harrisburg, I don’t think we would have ordered anything else.
Alas, shortly after finishing our first meals, we ordered another round of crêpes, this time from the sweet section. My dad got the original Belgium dark chocolate and I got the same, but with raspberry jam. The food came out very quickly and was presented with an adorable heart formed in the powdered sugar! They tasted amazing and solidified my love for dark chocolate and fruit combos once again.
My dad and I spent a good hour and a half scribbling on the tables, talking, and eating before we left. The owners/workers of the restaurant were both very nice and ran the shop very efficiently on their own. I was really impressed.
All in all, I really loved the shop and hope to visit again soon so I can try more of their items! If I lived closer, I could totally see my friends and I going there to hangout and do some work after school or maybe going with my parents for a family meal during the weekend. If you’re in the area and looking for a cute place to eat with really anyone, I would definitely recommend checking out Au Bon Lieu!
