Gregory Alan Isakov: An Evening With

Gregory Alan Isakov

The Fillmore (Charlotte, NC)
01/21/23

As a photographer who typically covers rock and indie shows, An Evening with Gregory Alan Isakov was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. From the moment I walked into the sold out venue in Charlotte, North Carolina, the entire atmosphere was something dreamy and captivating. The cold weather outside paired perfectly with the warmth and comfort that Isakov brought to the stage. Despite the presence of almost 2,000 people in the venue, there still managed to be a feeling of intimacy in the way the entire band presented themselves onstage. That warm and content feeling continued throughout the set, bringing a relaxed and mellow feeling to the night.

Gregory Alan Isakov opened the show with “Southern Star,” a song off of his 2018 album, Evening Machines. He has quite an extensive discography, his first release being in 2005 and consistently creating since then. His voice carried through the venue making it impossible to not focus on the stage. Toward the end of the set, Gregory performed “Big Black Car,” from his 2009 album, This Empty Northern Hemisphere. The song had a resurgence after going viral on TikTok, and now has over 140 million streams on Spotify alone. That’s nothing new to Gregory, though, as most of his fan favorites are nearing the 100 million mark, anyway.

Isakov and the band finished the show with a two-song encore gathered around a single condenser mic, bringing an unforgettable magical moment to the venue. If Gregory Alan Isakov isn’t already on your list of concerts for the year, you won’t want to miss out! That is, if it’s not already sold out!
