The London-based alternative pop duo consisting of Josephine Vander Gucht and Anthony West is back again with yet another incredible album.
Josephine and Anthony first self-produced their debut album starting in September of 2014, releasing one song a month for a year. Oh Wonder had live dates already scheduled even before the album came out. The debut album, titled Oh Wonder, was released in September of 2015, with two unreleased songs included. This first album consisted of slow-grooving tunes and keyboard and drum songs. Since their debut, the duo has accomplished international success. They became an online sensation with their music videos with an extraordinary number of streams.
Recently, Oh Wonder released their second album, titled Ultralife, and just one week past the release, the album went in at #8 on the Official UK Charts, the duo saying, “Today was undoubtedly the best day of our lives… It’s been our dream to be part of a Top 10 record all our lives. But if it was ever gonna happen, we thought we’d have a writing credit on one song for another artist’s album.” This album marked a major milestone in the duo’s career. The album features more upbeat tunes compared to their previous album, with actual bass, drums, and strings. Each one of the 12 songs have a different feel and adds a unique flare to the album.
“Ultralife”
“Ultralife” is probably the most upbeat track on the album. Josephine and Anthony describe it as finding someone who makes you feel truly invincible. The beat is so strong throughout the song and it’s probably one of my favorite songs by them.
“High on Humans”
“High on Humans” has a funkier tune, especially in the intro. Josephine describes the story behind it and it’s about being with those people that get you so hyped and give you such an adrenaline rush that your heart is beating out of your chest.
Oh Wonder reminds me of bands like Urban Cone and POWERS, especially with their more upbeat songs like “Ultralife” and “Lifetimes.” They have 4.3 million monthly listeners on Spotify and I expect this number will rise. And for those of you that just love their music, they may be coming to a city near you on their Ultralife Tour! U.S. tour dates are listed below.
